A 93-year-old Fremont man turned himself in to police early Saturday after allegedly fatally shooting his 86-year-old spouse in a grocery store parking lot, authorities said.

Shortly after midnight on Jan. 3, the Fremont Police Department received a call from Richard Hocking, who said he had shot his spouse and intended to surrender, according to a police statement. Officers located Hocking beside his vehicle in the 5000 block of Mowry Avenue and took him into custody without incident.

Inside the vehicle, officers found Hocking’s 86-year-old spouse in the front passenger seat. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. A firearm recovered in the vehicle was connected to the shooting, police said.

Hocking provided a statement to detectives regarding his reasons for the shooting, but officials have not publicly disclosed a motive. He was booked on suspicion of homicide with a firearm enhancement and is being held pending arraignment.

Fremont police noted the investigation remains active and that there is no known ongoing threat to the community.
